3 Steps for Safer Products You Should Take in September
Healthy Child
Thursday, September 09, 2010
On September 13th Congress will reconvene from summer recess with a swirl of activity as politicians push to finalize votes on many pending bills before elections.
This year has seen a swell of policies aimed at protecting health through better product regulations. Sadly, none have been passed, yet.
This may be your last chance before a bill must be reintroduced in 2011. Please help support them by taking these 3 simple steps!
1. Ask your US Representative to co-sponsor the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act. This is the HOUSE bill, which is a stronger version than the Senate bill (Safe Chemicals Act). What it needs is more cosponsors! The more cosponsors, the more likely and speedy a bill will be passed. Tell your Representative to co-sponsor this important bill.
2. Ask Congress to get behind the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010. For the first time in 70 years, we have a real chance to pass national legislation that would eliminate harmful chemicals from the products women, men and children put on their bodies every day. The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, introduced by U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky with Rep. Edward Markey and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, is a huge moment for consumers, parents and environmental health advocates.
Now Congress needs to hear from us. Please tell your elected officials this common-sense legislation is important to you!
3. Ask your Senators to support Feinstein’s proposed amendment to the Food Safety Modernization Act that would ban BPA from children’s food and beverage containers.
The proposed amendment would ban BPA from baby bottles, sippy cups, infant formula and baby food. Awesome, right? Unfortunately, some Senators still need to be convinced that getting the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) out of baby food and infant formula is an urgent food safety issue that MUST be addressed in the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010.
Remember, democracy is not a spectator sport – it only works when we the people get involved! These three actions are the very least you can do to help support policies that better protect our children’s health. Please consider taking it a bit further by calling, writing, or even meeting with your elected officials. Together we CAN make a difference!
