Roses are red. Violets are blue. The very best gifts are those that don’t harm you.
Seriously, did you know that conventional flowers can be covered in pesticide residues? And flowers grown abroad often use pesticides that have been banned in the U.S. or in quantities far exceeding U.S. regulations. And that standard box of chocolates? Filled with questionable preservatives, colorings, and additives. And last year, lead was found in Valentine’s teddy bears!
Show your love without causing unintended health effects by choosing one of these non-toxic options.
8 Awesome, Easy Eco-Crafts for Kids to Give as Gifts. (These were originally December holiday ideas, but put a heart on any of them and –voila! – Valentine’s gift!)
5 biodynamic wines, sustainably selected from The Daily Green.
3 handmade ideas: AlphaMom’s Valentine’s cards, a book made from a deck of cards with 52 reasons you love someone, and A Little Hut’s egg carton heart.
50+ Safe Fragrances for Women from EWG’s Skin Deep Database. (They have many recommendations for men, as well!)
14 random picks:
- Make a donation to a non-profit organization on behalf of the person (hint, hint, maybe an organization like Healthy Child).
- Buy the person a gift certificate for an experience you can share.
- Arrange dinner at a local restaurant specializing in organic or locally grown food.
- Give natural body care products.
- Buy an organic stuffed animal.
- Make a homemade meal using one of these easy recipes.
- Give a coupon book (for things like back rubs, sleeping in, etc).
- Buy a fruit tree (a gift that keeps on giving).
- Opt for an indoor plant (these ones will even help clean the air).
- Bake some homemade sweets like organic cookies, cake or pie.
- Buy some comfy organic sleepwear or bedding.
- Give the gift of time.
- Check out Etsy Organic (a one-stop shop for amazing, handmade organic goodies).

Great info! One of my other favorite places to shop for non-toxic goods is Hyenacart.com. Mostly everything there is handmade by stay at home moms and dads who care about the families who use their goods.
