August Blog Carnival: Clean Air and Water Solutions
Healthy Child
Sunday, August 29, 2010
In an effort to help build the movement to protect children from harmful chemicals, we host a monthly Carnival highlighting the many ways each and every one of you are creating healthy environments for children.
This month's topic, Every Sip – and Breath – You Take, focused on clean water and air solutions. We were inspired by so many unique stories whether it’s planting foliage around your house, going polyurethane free, exposing water risks, cleaning up indoor air, or not leaving your car idling!
So here it is, your new #1 resource for discovering ways families are testing their tap, reflexing their green thumbs and cleaning water and air.
Annie Urban: Water, A Right and a Risk
Although we should reduce our household consumption of water overall, there is one exception. We should be turning our taps on more often to drink up instead of reaching for a bottle from the fridge.
Elizabeth Escandon:10 Alternatives to Synthetic Air Fresheners
A very brief discussion of the negatives of synthetic air fresheners with a list of natural alternatives.
Leslie Martin: Unstink Your Life With No-Brainer, No-Spray DIY Air Fresheners
Sometimes, things get stinky. Here are 5-1/2 easy green ways to freshen your air, without spritzing, spraying, or misting.

Toni Turbeville: GREEN TIP : Breathe Deeply with Tips to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Toni's Treehouse uses her family's eco-friendly lifestyle to talk about how to be kinder to the environment and ourselves. Improve your indoor air quality with these simple, easy tips!
Rachel Hauser: Rooting out Polyurethane Foam
It'll take more than organic mattresses to clear your home's air of polyurethane foam's airborne particles and ongoing release of VOCs. Take steps to protect your health by recovering (tutorial here!) or replacing offending furnishings!

Kimberly Button: Clean Air Starts in Your Shower!
How can changing your shower curtain dramatically improve your indoor air? Make this simple switch and reduce your chemical exposure in your home.
Jessica Anne: Green Thursdays: Breathing Fresh Air
Since we spend a lot of time indoors, having clean air inside is so important. There are some simple, natural ways to keep the air inside your home clean.

Lori Alper: Ready, Set, Stop Your Engines
Everyday in the U.S. millions of cars and trucks idle needlessly, sometimes for hours. Imagine if we all took the time to turn off our engines when we stopped- what an easy way to contribute to improved air quality and respiratory health in our communities.
Tiffany Larson: Chlorine in Swimming Pools and the Link to Asthma
Swimming pools are great for fun and exercise, but what chemicals in the pool might be setting your little ones up for future health problems?

Robbie @ Going Green Mama: 5 Steps to Cleaner Air in Our Homes
Our steps to cleaner water and air in our home are simple solutions, that no matter where you are in your financial situation, you can take on for your own.
Alexandra Grabbe: Imagine a Green Wellfleet
Since the utility company on Cape Cod still plans to spray up to five herbicides along 150 miles of power lines to control vegetation, rather than mowing as in the past, despite involvement by citizens, legislators, and Congressman William Delahunt, I wrote a letter to EPA New England head Curt Spalding, urging him to consider Cape Cod's uniqueness with its sole source aquifer and drinking water from private wells and to intervene. I shared the letter with blog readers in this post about imagining a green Wellfleet, the town where I live.
Thank you all for your super submissions! Be sure to watch our blog for next month’s carnival announcement!

Great blog! I really enjoyed reading about all of the different ways to green up my home :). Another great way to promote green health in kids is to give them reusable water bottles instead of purchasing bottled water. Thanks for posting, keep it up!(:
