Recent Research
• The rate of a common reproductive birth defect in males is no longer increasing in the US, leading researchers to wonder whether phthalates and other endocrine disrupting chemicals are in fact harming boys’ sexual development. This is bittersweet news, considering the chemical industry is pointing to this study as proof that their products are safe, thus slowing attempts to regulate them.
• BPA has been found in the metal lids of baby food jars. It is leaching from the lids into the baby food and was found in 99 out of 122 products tested, and the amounts in several were the same as in the previously denounced plastic baby bottles. Find the full results here.
• Tap water may be safer and better regulated than bottled water. The EPA requires public drinking water to undergo more testing than bottled water, provide annual quality reports, and adhere to phthalate health standards, while the FDA has no such restrictions. This has bolstered the call for more accurate labels on all household products, as Congress is currently questioning whether bottled water is being regulated enough and are calling for more information to be disclosed on the issue.
Other News
• 9 companies have been fined as little as one cent for every lead-contaminated toy they made, imported, distributed, or sold. Considering the deadly consequences of lead exposure, and the fact that Mattel and Fisher-Price were previously fined $2.56 per toxic toy, this figure is disturbingly low.
