Non-Toxic Tips and Tools for National Craft Month

Pull out the glue, glitter, clay and construction paper – it’s National Craft Month!

My daughters and I absolutely love to craft, especially using natural materials and supplies we find in our recycling. Our last project was turning a plastic domed package that originally housed a small cake into a terrarium. We put sand on the bottom and then found two types of moss in our yard to place on top. We also nestled in a small ceramic deer that we found at a thrift store, an intricately carved small twig that had been gnawed at over time by various insects, and a small handful of beautiful blue juniper berries. With the plastic dome over it, the terrarium only needs a few drops of water a month. And, we get the pleasure of peeking in at a tiny woodland scene (which is a nice change from our rocky, desert surroundings).

This month make a special effort to spend time with your child working on a craft. And, all year long, make sure you’re giving your children the safest materials to develop their creativity.

Easy Project Ideas:

A stencil made from a cereal box and a leaf (you could use any shape you like) from Learning Vicariously.
Naturally dyed play-dough from One Golden Apple.
Homemade sidewalk chalk from Mad Maggie Designs.
A tutorial for making giant bubbles from Monkey Lobster.
Homemade paste from NikkiShell couldn’t be any easier or prettier.
