The Big Risk of Insanely Small Nanoparticles in Our Food

Healthy Child
Monday, February 09, 2009

One of our favorite green bloggers, Marguerite Manteau-Rao, recently wrote a fascinating commentary on nanoparticles in our food on her blog, La Marguerite. In the blog, Marguerite discusses a recent report by Friends of the Earth asserting that 100 different food products and packaging currently on the shelves are made using untested nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology is unregulated by the FDA and includes little research into the long-term effects of its application to our food. She includes a list of companies already known to engage in nanofood technology and a few steps you can take to counteract the practice.

La Marguerite is an environmental blog focused on behavioral solutions to climate change and other sustainability issues. Marguerite’s interest in sustainability and all environmental things was triggered by ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ presentation from Al Gore, at Stanford University in 2005. With a background in industrial engineering, marketing and advertising, and clinical social work, she offers a nuanced and comprehensive perspective to the sustainability discussion.

It is scary that food products and packaging are already on the shelves containing untested nanotechnology. Would love to see more research on this topic.
