Katy Perry is a Mom on a Mission®!
March 27, 2013
Katy Perry is Healthy Child Healthy World’s March 2013 finalist for our Mom on a Mission® award. Read her first-person story below on how she became an advocate for children’s health.
By Katy Perry, Director of Programs, Green Schools Alliance and March 2013 Mom on a Mission®
My daughter is one of 7 million children in the US who suffer from asthma, a condition often triggered by the air pollution created by power plants, trash incinerators, and tailpipes of cars, trucks and buses.
To help my daughter and all asthma sufferers breathe more freely, I’m on a mission to reduce air pollution through my work as Director of Programs for the non-profit organization, the Green Schools Alliance (GSA). GSA programs connect and empower all members of a school community to lead the way toward global sustainability. These programs reach over 2 million students in more than 3,000 K-12 schools worldwide.
I work tirelessly to promote environmental action and education through programs such as the GSA Peer-to-Peer network, Student Climate and Conservation Congress (Sc3), Green Cup Challenge, and GSAx events. With my background as a science educator, I understand the delicate interplay of the biological, chemical and physical systems that support life on our planet. As a mother of two, I know that ultimately the health of our children is inextricably connected with the health of the environment we live in.
