Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
Actor and Actress
Rita: If I get involved in something, it's not as if I sit around and say, Today, I'll make a change. It's an education process. It's a lifestyle attitude you develop. Recently, I read about plastic and researched it a bit, and then I replaced all of our plastic bottles with reusable glass canisters. It took no time before all of us—kids, too—were using them.
Tom: This new attitude has been developing, I think, since when Apollo 8 went to the moon at the end of 1968 and took that first-ever picture of the whole Earth. I remember what an amazing moment that was for everybody, seeing this blue and white ball. So that's what it looks like, I thought. It felt almost chromosomal: We could see we were limited, that there was not an infinite amount of everything. And that we'd better not waste anything. Because that's all there was. From HEALTHY CHILD HEALTHY WORLD. Reprinted by arrangement with Plume, a member of Penguin Group (USA) Inc. Copyright (c) 2009 by Healthy Child Healthy World.
